The engine can be had for $2500 (~30-40k miles) and a swap would be fairly simple. No custom work required. It literally bolts and plugs in. Even the wheels, as the 2009 A4 S-line came with the 19" triple 5 spoke wheels that S4 owners proclaim as 'S4 wheels' (even though they were on the RS6 4 years ago!) The ride height of an S4 is apparently 1.2 inches lower than a base A4, and 0.4 inches lower than a S-line or SPORT A4. That's tough to spot from a difference though!
We drove a 2010 and 2011 A4 Avant back-to-back a couple of times before buying. The 6-speed cars felt more responsive. We also thought Sport mode made more of a difference in the 8-speed. In normal D, the 8-speed drives pretty mellow and seeks the highest gears quickly. And talk about overdrive: 2000 RPM = ~82 MPH. Can somebody please clarify. Technically, there is a 2016 B8.5 Allroad. Minor changes. I know because I bought a 2015 and I was just watching the model progress and it stopped in 2016. B9 may have come out in 2016 but as a 2017 model.

The 0BF sport rear diff was optional on the B8.0 and the B8.5 S4. So any specific S4 you're looking at may or may not have it. If it doesn't, it'll have the 0BC open rear diff. The front diff is always an open diff. The center diff is always going to be a Torsen, not a Crown.
Allroad's ground clearance is 7.1 inches, just 1.5 inches more than the A4 Avant wagon. I guess that's the major differences. According to car and driver avant sline ground clearance is 4.2 inches, having parked beside an allroad it looked like a lifted truck next to my Avant. 2011 A4 Avant S-line Prestige. B5 rear diffs with appropriately geared transmission are compatible. B5 rear differential are NOT compatible with any B6/7. The B5 Quattro rear differential casing incorporates a long extential / tail, which the B6/7 don't. This gives the B5 a lot shorter propshaft. .
